Castle Waller

Castle Cully, in the parish of Kilnarath, was owned by the Ryan family. After the siege of Limerick by the forces of Cromwell, only the walls were standing [1]. The lands were confiscated and Cully and the adjacent lands became the property of Richard Waller [12], an officer in Cromwell's army. Richard Waller lived in Limerick but reconstructed the castle, using the stones of the original structure. The castle was later occupied by his son, Richard [11] and subsequently was renamed Castlewaller. Kilnareth, the nearby medieval parish church and also in ruins, was restored as well. Castlewaller was inherited by Edward, the eldest son who died unmarried, then by his brother William [10]. During this time, the settlement of Tullow (Tullagh) became the town of Newport.

Castle Waller was sold in 1851during the famine by William Henry Brazier Waller, the last of the family to own the estate. It was destroyed by fire in the late 1880's.
